2019 Property Award Winners

What a year it’s been for the owners of Carmichael Lodge. Having built and indeed moved into their beautiful oak framed home based in Fife, the house itself is also the worthy winner of not just one but two prestigious awards for its innovative design and finish.

November 2019: The Daily Telegraph Homebuilding & Renovating Home of the Year Award Winners

For nearly 30 years, The Daily Telegraph and Homebuilding & Renovating have joined forces to uncover and celebrate the UK’s finest homes and of course, the creative self-builders behind the projects.

We entered Carmichael Lodge into the ‘Best Traditional-style Self Build’ category. Our clients were committed to designing a property that showcased traditional Scottish building styles and remained in-keeping with the local vernacular. So, our Regional Architectural Designers, Craig Thomson and Andrew Hunter, worked with the homeowners to bring their self-build dream to life. The design of the oak frame itself contained striking glazed gables that welcome natural light into the property while providing a vast view of the surrounding landscape. Our clients also chose to use local materials such as natural stone, for the external wall finish and the intricate detailing that defines the window areas.

Announcing their win, judge Jason Orme, noted that Carmichael Lodge “eloquently demonstrates why oak framing continues to be one of the most popular self-build trends: this Scottish home simply oozes personality and rustic charm. Statement features such as the staircase, double-height living space and turret bring additional delight to the internal spaces.”

September 2019: Herald Property Award Winners

The Herald Property Awards for Scotland prides the accomplishments of Scotland’s most innovative and prosperous house builders, developers and registered social landlords. As publisher of Scotland’s most inclusive property guide, The Herald has an exclusive understanding of the new build market.

We entered Carmichael Lodge into the ‘Best Individual New Build and Small Development’ category. Our clients weren’t looking to build an overly large house which resulted in their build being 380sqm. However they did request bedrooms that were fully functional with good storage and that could house a double bed. The oak frame lent itself perfectly to these requirements while creating instant character to the space. This was highlighted by the incorporation of endless features into the design by. These included double height spaces, vaulted ceilings to the upper floor, gallery bridges from the stair to the bedrooms, external oak porches and more. The frame is not only structural but also begins to divide open plan spaces and rooms subtly. The master bedroom, for example, houses a sling frame which borders the bed and a dividing central frame featuring curved rafters and boss detail.

The ‘Best Individual New Build and Small Development’ category looked for an individual property or development in any style and setting. The entries were judged on the quality of design, layout, location, features and specification and energy efficiency: all of which Carmichael Lodge has an abundance of!

Both our clients and our team are over the moon with this fantastic achievement.
